Deposit books recovered from the crash of Captain Merlin Kehrer. These are the most tragic items I have in my collection. In 1951, my Great Grandfather, Captain Merlin Kehrer, was returning from Virginia in his F-51 Mustang when he suddenly crashed at a farm near Leesburg, Virginia. Merlin died on impact, and the entire scene was witnessed by the owner of the farm. The plane exploded, sending debris scattering across the field. The only personal items recovered from the wreckage were two deposit books with Merlin’s name in them, allowing investigators to quickly identify the pilot. One of the two deposit books is badly burned around the edges from the intense fire of the crash. Merlin was 29 years old when he died. He was a husband, and a father of 3 young children, all under 5 years old. He was far too young to leave this world the way he did, but his service to Canada and the United States of America will be remembered.
