Should you buy an iPad for flight training?

The answer to the above question differs significantly for different stages of flight training.

A pilot at an advanced stage of flight training can use an iPad to ease several tasks inside the cockpit.

A student pilot flying for a private pilot license might not find the iPad very useful. A pilot, training for his Instrument rating will find an iPad to be an excellent tool for cockpit management and navigate with ease.

Generally, pilots have to multi-task while flying an airplane.

Aviate, Navigate, and Communicate is a lot easier to say but quite hard to execute.

A pilot needs to do all these three tasks at the same time. There are various other things a pilot has to do while flying the airplane.

As a student pilot at an early stage of your pilot training, you need to focus on how to fly the airplane.

Without knowing how to fly the airplane and purchasing your first iPad is not going to be of any help.

Get used to with actual flying before investing on an iPad.

On the first few flights, a student pilot must only focus on:

  • How to control and maneuver the airplane;
  • Learn to communicate;
  • And navigation using visual references.

But if a student pilot relies on the iPad too much in the early stages of pilot training, it might become dangerous in the long run.

All student pilots begin their flying lessons in VFR conditions. The primary thing about flying in VFR condition is to fly the airplane using visual references.

So at this stage of flying, a student pilot should focus on navigating the plane using a map and visual references.

Having an iPad instead of using a paper map is a good idea.

But the obstacle is beginner pilots can easily be distracted.

They spend so much time looking at the iPad and navigate, that they forget to learn about flying the airplane using visual references outside.

So in case a pilot needs to fly using outside references, the student pilot unaware of the outside world will be lost entirely.

A student pilot that always flies using the iPad tends to use the Foreflight app and know exactly what is their current location and where they are heading.

When is the right time for student pilots to buy their iPad?

I don’t suggest student pilots to rely on the iPad so much during their first 20 hours of flight.

Or at least a student pilot must wait until they get their first solo flight.

Getting used to with iPad while listening to your flight instructor can overwhelm you with information, and you may not learn anything at all.

Let me share a story with you first.

When I begin my flight training, the first flight was short. It was an orientation flight, and I did not touch the controls. I only felt the control.

At that time, I did not know what is going to happen in the next few flights.

When I finally got to fly the airplane, I understood how sensitive the controls are. A slight movement of the yoke pitched the aircraft up and down hundreds of feet.

I was banking left, and I was banking right, I was flying the airplane everywhere.

But it was OK. It is common for student pilots in their first few flights.

However, on my next flight, my flight instructor started to teach me a lot of things like flying the airplane and use visual references outside.

Likewise, he threw a few questions at me, such as:

  • What happens if your pitot tube is blocked?
  • If the static port is blocked, which instruments will display incorrect reading?
  • What will you do if the engine fails?

Whatever my instructor asked me, he did it to test my awareness.

But I couldn’t answer him properly because I was too busy holding the map in one hand and pitching up and down, rolling left and right.

I was overwhelmed with all the information, and I felt like I will never get back in the cockpit again.

Nevertheless, I did get back to the cockpit and got my pilot license.

So what do you understand from my story?

The first few flights you will be puzzled with all the information you consume. Your mind will be all over the place.

Until you get your first solo, you will not get used to with all the tasks inside the cockpit.

Your mind will be busy figuring out:

  • How to fly the airplane well;
  • Communicate using the correct phrases;
  • Navigate using the map and looking outside to find out your reference.

Usually, a student pilot once gets his/her first solo, becomes familiar with all the tasks inside the cockpit. Likewise, getting your solo will boost your confidence in flying.

So all the tasks that seemed baffling in the beginning will become a lot easier then.

Aviate, navigate using visual reference, and communicating with air traffic will not be so difficult for you now.

Right at this stage, a student pilot can buy an iPad.

Why can the iPad be useful for student pilots after getting their first solo?

By now, the student pilot is familiar with the airspace and learned a few things about actual flying.

The iPad at this stage will be a lot less distracting for the student pilots.

Additionally, after you get solo, you will have to fly cross country legs to fulfill requirements for private pilot licenses.

At this point, having an iPad to fly cross country flights will be a huge help. Now that you are already used to with multi-tasking and conducting safe flights, you will not be distracted by using the iPad.

Flying several times to the same airport is the right time to introduce an iPad in your flights.

However, I want to clarify another matter that most student pilots don’t realize.

Before even you get into the aircraft with your iPad, familiarize yourself with the apps on your iPad.

There are many useful apps for iPad to use for flying. Numerous apps, and many of them are perfect. Many of them will aid you in pilot training.

But if you have ten apps installed on your iPad and do not know which particular app to use at which situation, then you will get lost during the flight.

You have a fantastic tool, which is the iPad.

But not being familiar with the app you want to use will only be a distraction.

For example, if you install the Forefight app on your iPad, you may think you can practice using the app and habituate with its use during your flight. That is not the ideal thing to do.

Are you going to fly the airplane, or are you going to master how to use the iPad and the Foreflight app?

I understand, you cannot practice the app for navigation while on the ground. But I am saying learn which section of the app will be useful at which phase of the flight.

Knowing about the other iPad apps and acquainting with them to find them in your iPad instantly will help you further during your Instrument flights.

How useful is an iPad for student pilots during instrument training?

Not having an iPad until you get your solo is alright. Buying an iPad before acquiring a private pilot license is essential.

However, getting the instrument rating without an iPad, I don’t recommend that at all.

Having an iPad and using it for instrument training will ease many tasks for student pilots.

Using a cellular iPad, with a portable ADS-B device, will improve your situational awareness massively during instrument flight.

All the necessary charts you need for your instrument flight will be at your fingertip.

Instead of going through a pile of paper charts, you can find the required resource in just a few tap on your iPad.

Similarly, the iPad helps improve cockpit management. Hence the iPad has acquired another name:

  • The Electronic flight bag.

Nevertheless, you have to practice using the iPad before you take it to the air.

The reason for using an iPad in instrument flight is to increase a pilots efficiency. Not knowing how to use the apps efficiently will hamper the smooth flow of your flight.

If a student pilots learn to use the iPad in a very early stage of their pilot training, this modern tool can be of great help during any flight. Which iPad to buy as a student pilot?

Before a student pilot buys an iPad, the pilot must consider the aircraft he/she is frequently flying.

Have you noticed I mentioned to buy a Cellular iPad mini?

It is because if you buy a cellular iPad mini, your iPad will already have a GPS chip installed in it. Otherwise, you will have to pay for an extra GPS.

Without a GPS tracker, the satellite cannot find your exact location.

Did you think:

  • How are you going to navigate accurately if the satellite can’t locate your aircraft?

Thus you will be unaware of your current location on the map. You will be lost.

So either you will have to buy a GPS tracker for your WiFi-only iPad, or you have to choose a Cellular iPad mini.

Willing to become a pilot is a dream for many, regardless of science or commerce students.

But did you know the pilot training is not only restricted for commerce students?

In general, people have no concept of pilot training and the aviation field.

Did you ask someone who does not know aviation about can commerce students do pilot training?

I can assume the answer was you need to have Physics and Maths in your high school for pilot training.

I know because I have been there too.

That is the most common answer.

Nevertheless, in this article, I explain how can a commerce student start their flight training. Likewise, all the difficulties for student pilots coming from non-science backgrounds.

Is commerce students eligible for pilot training?

Yes, commerce students are eligible for pilot training. The truth is there is no such requirement that you need to have a science background to obtain pilot licenses.

You will learn to fly an airplane, not become a scientist.

No wonder when I passed my 10th grade, someone told me to pick Physics and Mathematics as my high school subjects.

I intended to be a pilot since before 10th grade. Accordingly, with my determination, I didn’t think twice before choosing physics and mathematics for my high school studies.

But as I am a pilot today, I understood having physics and mathematics in my high school helped.

However, no flight school has such a requirement that the potential student pilot needs to study physics and mathematics.

Anyone from commerce background, or non-science subjects in their high school can enroll in a flight school.

As long as the student completes his 12th grade, he is eligible for pilot training.

Can I become a pilot without physics?

Having general knowledge of physics will help you to grasp pilot training studies, however having physics is not a requirement.

Thus you can become a pilot without physics.

But those complications can be fixed by talking to the ground instructors.

The cost of pilot training is distinguished. It is not unknown. Seeing the pricey course fee blows many people.

People not in the aviation industry, thinks the pilot training course fee is absurd.

But recognizing the associated cost with pilot training will allow everyone to understand why pilot training is so expensive.

I have clearly described in this post why the flight training cost is high, yet many students dream of becoming a pilot.

Why is pilot training so expensive?

Pilot training is expensive because a student pilot has to fly the actual airplane to build hours. The cost of the fuel, renting the aircraft, and hiring a flight instructor is all included within the training course fee.

It is not only these costs that make the flight training expensive.

Let begin by explaining this:

To obtain a pilot license, one must fly the airplane for hours. Each civil aviation body has its regulations, and students operate to satisfy the hour requirement.

So renting an airplane and paying for the fuel is expensive. It is understandable.

It is not only the cost of rental, and fuel, the fee for a flight instructor, must be considered too.

A student can not learn to fly the airplane by himself.

Thus a student during the flight needs to have a flight instructor on board.

Do you think the flight instructor is going to teach you for free?

No, that is not possible because the flight instructor is working to make a living too.

Therefore the cost of hiring a flight instructor is added in the pilot training course fee.

These three costs are what a pilot students realize once they start the flight training.

Nevertheless, these costs are just what anyone can see. But there are a lot more goes in the background maintaining the aircraft.

Maintaining the aircraft costs a lot of money for flight schools. Hence the flight schools design a course fee that will aid them in managing all the associated costs.

A flight school has to rent a hangar to park and a runway to operate their aircraft.

The rental of a hangar in an airport is not inexpensive. Moreover, if the flight school operates from an international airport, the flight school administration has to count more money for the hangar rental.

Next, the flight school has to pay the airport authority for using the runway. The airport authority calculates that fee by the number of takeoff and landings the company aircraft has made in a particular track.

What are the costs of maintaining the aircraft?

I have read about various airplane crashes in the past where the student survived, but the flight instructor die.

Yet the student pilot survived the crash. It was challenging for the student pilot to get back to flying. Reasoning the student pilot had severe trauma from crash, never had the intention to fly an airplane again.

I believe you, as a student pilot, do not want such incidents, hence choosing a flight school that has a top-notch aircraft maintenance is the best idea.

And paying a bit extra for the top-notch maintaining a school has, is not a bad deal.

So what is maintenance of aircraft?

Every airplane requires overhauling after 100 hours of flight time. After two thousand hours of flying time, replacing an airplane’s engines is essential.

Planes need to replace many tine parts, which is not cheap. Some significant parts may begin to show flaws and require replacements occasionally.

Annually inspectors from the civil aviation comes to inspect the airplanes and decide whether the aircraft is airworthy or not. There are several certification that requires renewal annually and has a price.

So all these costs have to be covered by flight schools, and these prices slightly reflects on the pilot training course fee.

Hence, pilot training seems expensive, yet the flight schools have to cover their costs operating the institute.

Can a poor person become a pilot?

This question may seem weird in this article. Yet I want to answer the question.

The question seemed relevant to the topic of this article as I am explaining about expensive flight training fees.

From the rare sight of a pilot training package, it might seem obvious that only rich people can choose to become a pilot.

It is indeed a privilege to have money, not just to become a pilot for anything in life that is applicable.

But does that mean only rich people have the luxury?

The answer is no. I know a few pilots that are not from wealthy families and their parents couldn’t afford to pay for their flight training.

However, it did not stop them from pursuing their dream.

With enough determination, plans, and goals, a poor person can work harder and save money to become a pilot.

There are student loans that can aid someone to reach for the sky.

Regardless of rich and poor, anyone can achieve success in life by working hard and being persistent.

Pilot training can be costly, and many of us indeed take a step back from our dream just because of the pilot training cost.

People interested in becoming an airline pilot can’t figure out ways to fund pilot training.

Regardless, not many students fund their pilot training by themselves. There are ways like sponsored programs or student loans that can help aspiring pilots to start their careers in the aviation field.

I will start by discussing the traditional way how people finance their training.

Financing from parents.

Traditionally students are financed by their parents to become a pilot.

Fresh high school graduates do not have the money neither can work to earn a large amount of money at that age to pay for the pilot training cost.

As you may already know that flight training is pricey.

There are obvious reasons for the training cost to be high.

Therefore asking support from your parents is the most logical way.

Start by asking support from your parents to fund your pilot training, and then if that is not possible, look for other options.

Option 2: Scholarship.

This option is not so standard. Many airlines used to hire pilots by funding their complete flight training.

The airlines interviewed individuals and recruited them. After recruiting prospective pilots, they would pay for all the costs of flight training.

The airlines will fund the complete pilot training until the student is in the cockpit of the airliner.

Today this option is not available, however for the students in the USA can request funds from the Pell grant.

Federal pell grants will not pay much, but it will be helpful for students to pay for the flight training.

And the best thing is the students don’t have to pay back the money.

Student loans.

Student loans are the second-best option. I believe if you cannot get funding from your parents.

There are student loans vastly available for prospective pilot students.

You can take student loans up to 100,000 USD and get your pilot licenses from an accredited school.

I imagine 50,000 USD is reasonable to get your commercial pilot licenses.

However, having an extra 50,00 USD will aid you in getting a type rating.

Many airlines today do not hire pilots merely with a commercial pilot license.

Some airline wants the pilots to pay for their type rating. Assuming you interviewed in an airline and the airline hired you.

But they might request you to pay for the type rating and the job will be confirmed.

In that case, you might need around 30,000 USD for your type rating. However, as you have an extra 50,000 USD from your student loan, you can spend it on your type rating.

Yet you will have some extra cash which you can use for urgent situations.

Once you complete your type rating and start working for the airline, trust in no time, you will be able to pay back your loan.

Pilot in the airlines usually earn six-figure annually, which is enough for you to return the loan money with interests.

But student loans are a safe option for those pilots who are determined to get a job in airlines within a short time.

If you are unsure you will be able to work in the airline in the next one or two years, then I must say taking such a significant amount of money might become a burden for you.

Option 4: Work in a different profession and save money.

The safest option of all, I believe, is working in a different profession and save money.

In that way, you will not have the burden of returning the loan.

If you have your own money, you will not have a burden on your parents too.

Assuming you are determined to operate airplanes and make a living, you can go for a bachelor’s degree first.

Do a degree in your preferred field. You can graduate from any industry from commerce to science and yet take flying lessons.

But I suggest if you are determined to become a pilot, choose a graduation degree in the aviation field.

I will use an example of aeronautical engineering here.

Pick aeronautical engineering for your college degree.

After graduation, you can work as an aeronautical engineer. Being an aeronautical engineer, you will experience working in the aviation field.

As an aeronautical engineer, it is possible to make six figures income.

You can save money from your current profession and enroll in a Part 61 pilot training course.

The part 61 flight training is an excellent way for students to train while they have another full-time profession.

You don’t have to save up 50,000 USD to start your flight training.

If you are interested in doing flight training while you are working in a different profession, first, you have to make a plan on how you are going to obtain your pilot licenses.

The plan must have how many hours will you fly every month.

As you are already working full time, you may have only spare time for flying lessons during the weekend. Fly at least 5-6 hours during the weekend. In a month, you will be able to achieve at least 20 hours.

If you can consistently fly 20 hours each month, within a year, you will be able to obtain your commercial pilot licenses.

And flying twenty hours each month by saving up from your full-time job, will not be a burden either.

The sooner you determine how you are going to achieve your goals, the better it is for you.

Flying twenty hours each month is the best practice, I believe.

Even if you can’t manage the money to fly twenty hours each month, I suggest operating 10 hours a month.

That way, it may take a more prolonged period to complete pilot training, but in two years, you will have your commercial pilot license.

Before I say about the commercial pilot license requirements, I want to mention the commercial pilot training requirements.

If you are not eligible to become a commercial pilot and fly 150 hours only to see you can’t apply for a commercial pilot license, then you will only waste your money.

Before you decide to begin commercial pilot training, ask yourself, why do you want to become a commercial pilot?

Do you have no interest in working in the airline and intend to fly for recreation?
