A student pilot that always flies using the iPad tends to use the Foreflight app and know exactly what is their current location and where they are heading.

When is the right time for student pilots to buy their iPad?

I don’t suggest student pilots to rely on the iPad so much during their first 20 hours of flight.

Or at least a student pilot must wait until they get their first solo flight.

Getting used to with iPad while listening to your flight instructor can overwhelm you with information, and you may not learn anything at all.

Let me share a story with you first.

When I begin my flight training, the first flight was short. It was an orientation flight, and I did not touch the controls. I only felt the control.

At that time, I did not know what is going to happen in the next few flights.

When I finally got to fly the airplane, I understood how sensitive the controls are. A slight movement of the yoke pitched the aircraft up and down hundreds of feet.

I was banking left, and I was banking right, I was flying the airplane everywhere.

But it was OK. It is common for student pilots in their first few flights.

However, on my next flight, my flight instructor started to teach me a lot of things like flying the airplane and use visual references outside.

Likewise, he threw a few questions at me, such as:

  • What happens if your pitot tube is blocked?
  • If the static port is blocked, which instruments will display incorrect reading?
  • What will you do if the engine fails?

Whatever my instructor asked me, he did it to test my awareness.

But I couldn’t answer him properly because I was too busy holding the map in one hand and pitching up and down, rolling left and right.

I was overwhelmed with all the information, and I felt like I will never get back in the cockpit again.

Nevertheless, I did get back to the cockpit and got my pilot license.

So what do you understand from my story?

The first few flights you will be puzzled with all the information you consume. Your mind will be all over the place.

Until you get your first solo, you will not get used to with all the tasks inside the cockpit.

Your mind will be busy figuring out:

  • How to fly the airplane well;
  • Communicate using the correct phrases;
  • Navigate using the map and looking outside to find out your reference.

Usually, a student pilot once gets his/her first solo, becomes familiar with all the tasks inside the cockpit. Likewise, getting your solo will boost your confidence in flying.

So all the tasks that seemed baffling in the beginning will become a lot easier then.

Aviate, navigate using visual reference, and communicating with air traffic will not be so difficult for you now.

Right at this stage, a student pilot can buy an iPad.

Why can the iPad be useful for student pilots after getting their first solo?

By now, the student pilot is familiar with the airspace and learned a few things about actual flying.

The iPad at this stage will be a lot less distracting for the student pilots.

Additionally, after you get solo, you will have to fly cross country legs to fulfill requirements for private pilot licenses.

At this point, having an iPad to fly cross country flights will be a huge help. Now that you are already used to with multi-tasking and conducting safe flights, you will not be distracted by using the iPad.

Flying several times to the same airport is the right time to introduce an iPad in your flights.

However, I want to clarify another matter that most student pilots don’t realize.

Before even you get into the aircraft with your iPad, familiarize yourself with the apps on your iPad.

There are many useful apps for iPad to use for flying. Numerous apps, and many of them are perfect. Many of them will aid you in pilot training.

But if you have ten apps installed on your iPad and do not know which particular app to use at which situation, then you will get lost during the flight.

You have a fantastic tool, which is the iPad.

But not being familiar with the app you want to use will only be a distraction.

For example, if you install the Forefight app on your iPad, you may think you can practice using the app and habituate with its use during your flight. That is not the ideal thing to do.

Having an iPad and using it for instrument training will ease many tasks for student pilots.

Using a cellular iPad, with a portable ADS-B device, will improve your situational awareness massively during instrument flight.

All the necessary charts you need for your instrument flight will be at your fingertip.

Instead of going through a pile of paper charts, you can find the required resource in just a few tap on your iPad.

Similarly, the iPad helps improve cockpit management. Hence the iPad has acquired another name:

  • The Electronic flight bag.

Nevertheless, you have to practice using the iPad before you take it to the air.

The reason for using an iPad in instrument flight is to increase a pilots efficiency. Not knowing how to use the apps efficiently will hamper the smooth flow of your flight.

If a student pilots learn to use the iPad in a very early stage of their pilot training, this modern tool can be of great help during any flight. Regardless of cross-country, VFR, MVFR, or instrument flight, a pilot that can use the iPad in the cockpit will have numerous benefits. The pilot can save time and do his tasks more efficiently.

Which iPad to buy as a student pilot?

Before a student pilot buys an iPad, the pilot must consider the aircraft he/she is frequently flying.

It is because if you buy a cellular iPad mini, your iPad will already have a GPS chip installed in it. Otherwise, you will have to pay for an extra GPS.

Without a GPS tracker, the satellite cannot find your exact location.

Did you think:

  • How are you going to navigate accurately if the satellite can’t locate your aircraft?

Thus you will be unaware of your current location on the map. You will be lost.

So either you will have to buy a GPS tracker for your WiFi-only iPad, or you have to choose a Cellular iPad mini.

Regardless, the iPad is an essential tool for pilots in modern aviation. As a student pilot, if you learn to use the iPad during your pilot training, it is going to benefit you in the future as a commercial pilot.

The answer is no. I know a few pilots that are not from wealthy families and their parents couldn’t afford to pay for their flight training.

However, it did not stop them from pursuing their dream.

With enough determination, plans, and goals, a poor person can work harder and save money to become a pilot.

There are student loans that can aid someone to reach for the sky.

Regardless of rich and poor, anyone can achieve success in life by working hard and being persistent.

People interested in becoming an airline pilot can’t figure out ways to fund pilot training.

I will start by discussing the traditional way how people finance their training.

Financing from parents.

Traditionally students are financed by their parents to become a pilot.

Fresh high school graduates do not have the money neither can work to earn a large amount of money at that age to pay for the pilot training cost.

As you may already know that flight training is pricey.

There are obvious reasons for the training cost to be high.

Therefore asking support from your parents is the most logical way.

Start by asking support from your parents to fund your pilot training, and then if that is not possible, look for other options.

Option 2: Scholarship.

This option is not so standard. Many airlines used to hire pilots by funding their complete flight training.

The airlines interviewed individuals and recruited them. After recruiting prospective pilots, they would pay for all the costs of flight training.

The airlines will fund the complete pilot training until the student is in the cockpit of the airliner.

Today this option is not available, however for the students in the USA can request funds from the Pell grant.

Federal pell grants will not pay much, but it will be helpful for students to pay for the flight training.

And the best thing is the students don’t have to pay back the money.

Student loans.

Student loans are the second-best option. I believe if you cannot get funding from your parents.

There are student loans vastly available for prospective pilot students.

You can take student loans up to 100,000 USD and get your pilot licenses from an accredited school.

I imagine 50,000 USD is reasonable to get your commercial pilot licenses.

However, having an extra 50,00 USD will aid you in getting a type rating.

Many airlines today do not hire pilots merely with a commercial pilot license.

Some airline wants the pilots to pay for their type rating. Assuming you interviewed in an airline and the airline hired you.

But they might request you to pay for the type rating and the job will be confirmed.

In that case, you might need around 30,000 USD for your type rating. However, as you have an extra 50,000 USD from your student loan, you can spend it on your type rating.

Yet you will have some extra cash which you can use for urgent situations.

Once you complete your type rating and start working for the airline, trust in no time, you will be able to pay back your loan.

But I suggest if you are determined to become a pilot, choose a graduation degree in the aviation field.

After graduation, you can work as an aeronautical engineer. Being an aeronautical engineer, you will experience working in the aviation field.

As an aeronautical engineer, it is possible to make six figures income.

You can save money from your current profession and enroll in a Part 61 pilot training course.

The part 61 flight training is an excellent way for students to train while they have another full-time profession.

You don’t have to save up 50,000 USD to start your flight training.

If you are interested in doing flight training while you are working in a different profession, first, you have to make a plan on how you are going to obtain your pilot licenses.

The plan must have how many hours will you fly every month.

As you are already working full time, you may have only spare time for flying lessons during the weekend. Fly at least 5-6 hours during the weekend. In a month, you will be able to achieve at least 20 hours.

If you can consistently fly 20 hours each month, within a year, you will be able to obtain your commercial pilot licenses.

And flying twenty hours each month by saving up from your full-time job, will not be a burden either.

The sooner you determine how you are going to achieve your goals, the better it is for you.

Flying twenty hours each month is the best practice, I believe.

Even if you can’t manage the money to fly twenty hours each month, I suggest operating 10 hours a month.

That way, it may take a more prolonged period to complete pilot training, but in two years, you will have your commercial pilot license.

I know because I have been there too. I t has been a long journey, and I had patience.

The hours flown from 50 to 150 is the commercial pilot training stage.

It is necessary to fly the minimum hours wanted by the civil aviation body in any specific country to obtain a commercial pilot license.

As in India, a pilot has to fly a total of 220 hours to get his commercial pilot license, and in the Philippines, 150 hours will make you eligible to become a commercial pilot.

A vital thing to note is the commercial pilot license comes after the private pilot license.

One must acquire a private pilot license first.

One a student pilot holds a private pilot license, he has to take commercial ground school.

This ground school syllabus is similar to the private pilot ground school syllabus. Yet the commercial pilot ground school is structured with more advanced and in-depth explanations of specific topics.

Thus I can only give you the approximate cost idea for the pilot training course.

Commercial pilot license requirements:

Before I say about the commercial pilot license requirements, I want to mention the commercial pilot training requirements.

First, you have to identify whether you are eligible to become a commercial pilot or not.

If you are not eligible to become a commercial pilot and fly 150 hours only to see you can’t apply for a commercial pilot license, then you will only waste your money.

Before you decide to begin commercial pilot training, ask yourself, why do you want to become a commercial pilot?

If you are determined to work as an airline pilot, then you must go for a commercial pilot training.

Do you have no interest in working in the airline and intend to fly for recreation?

A private pilot license and some additional rating will do the job adequately.

But to work as a commercial pilot and to satisfy commercial pilot license requirements, you must have the following:

  • At least 18 years of age;
  • A high school graduate;
  • Fluent in English;
